AOFN Audio has launched Grizzly, a free stereo modulation effect for macOS and Windows based on the Gristleizer circuit. The plugin centres on a modelled JFET stage driven by an internal LFO and offers two distinct modulation modes.
Grizzly is designed as a stereo modulation processor with selectable VCA and VCF modes. In VCA mode, the LFO controls the amplitude of the incoming signal, enabling effects that range from slow tremolo to rhythmic gating and audio-rate modulation. In VCF mode, the LFO modulates a lowpass filter, producing filter sweeps, pulsing effects, and autowah-style movement.
The internal LFO provides four waveform options:
- Triangle
- Square
- Saw up
- Saw down
Speed can be set freely between 0.01 Hz and 30 Hz or synchronised to the host DAW using note divisions from 1/1 to 1/32. This allows both tempo-locked modulation and independent movement.
Additional shaping controls are included to refine the modulation behaviour. The Shape parameter adjusts slope asymmetry for triangle waves and duty cycle for square waves. Offset determines how much of each LFO cycle actively drives the effect, while Bias sets the resting position of the modulation. A Drive control offers pre-gain adjustment from −12 dB to +24 dB into the modulator stage.
For stereo operation, a Spread control introduces an inter-channel LFO phase offset, enabling variations in modulation timing between the left and right channels. Output Level trim and a Bypass switch are also provided.
Key features include:
- VCA mode with amplitude modulation from slow tremolo to audio-rate speeds
- VCF mode with lowpass filter modulation
- Free-running and host-synced LFO operation
- Pre-gain drive and stereo phase offset controls
Grizzly is available for macOS 12 or later, with support for both Apple Silicon and Intel processors, in AU and VST3 formats. A Windows 10/11 x64 version is provided in VST3 format.
Grizzly is available as a free download.
