Arturia releases Pigments Play, a free Pigments-powered synth.

News: Arturia releases Pigments Play, a free Pigments-powered synth.

Arturia has launched Pigments Play, a free software synthesizer derived from its flagship Pigments instrument. The new release offers a streamlined way to access part of the Pigments sound engine and a curated selection of presets within a simplified interface.

Pigments Play is designed to provide immediate access to ready-made sounds while retaining core elements of the original synthesis architecture. Rather than including the full editing environment found in Pigments, the instrument focuses on preset browsing and macro-based sound shaping through a dedicated Play view. The interface is audio-reactive and visually responds as users perform and adjust parameters.

The free instrument includes 100 curated presets created by Pigments sound designers. These presets span a range of contemporary production styles, including pop, R&B, garage, house, drum and bass, trap, and ambient. The selection is intended to provide a broad palette of sounds suitable for modern music production contexts.

Each preset features four macro controls labelled Brightness, Timbre, Time, and Movement. In addition, four effect controls are available, covering two modulation effects, delay, and reverb. Macro assignments are configured individually for each preset, allowing the available adjustments to reflect the character of the selected sound.

Although Pigments Play offers a simplified interface, it is powered by the same six synthesis types found in the full version of Pigments:

  • Modal
  • Granular
  • Wavetable
  • Sample
  • Harmonic
  • Virtual Analog

The instrument also includes 68 filter modes and 20 effect algorithms. However, parameter access is limited compared to the full Pigments version. Pigments Play does not include the Main, FX, or Sequencer views, full modulation routing, or the in-app tutorial system. The preset library in Pigments Play contains 100 sounds, while the full Pigments instrument includes more than 1,700 presets.

An updated browser allows users to filter presets by type and instrument category. Pigments Play also connects to the Arturia Sound Store, which offers more than 200 additional sound banks created by artists and focused on specific genres. These include both free and paid expansions.

Controller integration is supported within Pigments Play. Arturia keyboards are automatically mapped, and users can manually assign parameters to other MIDI controllers. The instrument can also be played using a computer keyboard or via an on-screen virtual keyboard when running in standalone mode.

Pigments Play is compatible with Windows 10 or later and macOS 11 or later. It runs as a standalone application and as a plugin in VST, AU, and AAX formats. Installation and activation are managed through the Arturia Software Center.

Pigments Play is available as a free download from Arturia.
