Bandcamp lay off 50% of their staff.

News: Bandcamp lay off 50% of their staff.

Bandcamp, a popular music platform, has recently undergone significant staff reductions following its acquisition by Songtradr from Epic. Approximately half of Bandcamp’s workforce, including several members of the Bandcamp Daily editorial team, have been laid off as part of this transition.

When Epic announced the sale of Bandcamp to Songtradr, it was made clear that not all employees would receive offers from the new owner. Epic confirmed in a statement that these layoffs were not unexpected, and that the affected employees would receive severance from Epic. Songtradr, a music licensing company, had previously confirmed on October 5 that the layoffs would take place.

“Based on its current financials, Bandcamp requires some adjustments,” Songtradr stated. Bandcamp United, the workers’ union, had previously requested that Songtradr offer employment to all current Bandcamp staff, along with voluntary severance, after the sale. However, Songtradr has yet to recognize the union.

In a statement, Songtradr explained the reasoning behind the layoffs: “Over the past few years the operating costs of Bandcamp have significantly increased. It required some adjustments to ensure a sustainable and healthy company that can serve its community of artists and fans. After a comprehensive evaluation, including the importance of roles for smooth business operations and pre-existing functions at Songtradr, 50 percent of Bandcamp employees have accepted offers to join Songtradr.”

Songtradr also reassured that it is committed to maintaining the existing Bandcamp services that fans and artists love, including its artist-first revenue share, Bandcamp Fridays, and Bandcamp Daily. This move marks a significant change for Bandcamp, and it remains to be seen how these changes will impact the platform’s operations and community in the long term.
