Beatsurfing has launched VRAC, a sample-based drum instrument designed to transform any audio file into a playable drum kit. The instrument focuses on reshaping raw sound material into drum articulations through a morphing model-based system.
VRAC is built around the concept of “drumification,” allowing users to load a sample and define a start point before shaping it into percussive elements. Rather than relying on pre-made drum libraries, the instrument is intended to generate original kits directly from user-provided audio.
At the core of VRAC is an XY control interface that enables navigation between four primary drum articulations: kick, snare, clap, and hi-hat. By moving within this continuous space, users can morph between these models to uncover different percussive characteristics within the same source sample. The process is designed to help identify distinct drum-like qualities embedded in non-drum material.
The instrument provides several global and per-voice controls for shaping the resulting sounds. These include:
- Sample Start Control: Select a specific transient or segment of the loaded audio to define the playable slice.
- Drumification Models: Morph between kick, snare, hat, and clap profiles to determine the articulation type.
- Model Adjustment: Modify the blend and intensity of the selected drum model.
- Global Shaping Controls: Apply overall adjustments to the entire kit.
The workflow is structured to enable rapid kit creation by focusing on transformation rather than browsing.
