Big Fish Audio has launched Vintage Horns 3, a new library for Kontakt Player. This collection, developed in collaboration with Funk/Soul Productions, aims to authentically recreate the sound of horn soloists and sections from the 1930s to the 1970s.
Vintage Horns 3 offers a diverse range of virtual instruments that capture some of the most iconic horn styles from the era. These include the Detroit Soul Solo Bari Sax, the 1970s R&B Solo Alto Sax, the Grungy Rock ’N’ Roll Solo Tenor Sax, and the expressive Jazz-Fusion Flute, which features unique articulations such as flutter-tongue and “singing” effects.
The library is designed not to be a flawless, ultra-clean virtual instrument but rather to embody the raw, organic character of horn players from the ’30s to the ’70s. This approach includes the quirks and imperfections that made performances from that period memorable. The development team drew inspiration from the distinctive playing styles of legendary musicians like Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Fred Wesley, Eddie Harris, Wayne Shorter, David Sanborn, and Lenny Pickett. The horn sections of Motown, Tower of Power, the J.B.’s, and the Rebirth Brass Band also served as significant influences.
To achieve the desired sound, the creators of Vintage Horns 3 meticulously studied the techniques of these musicians. They focused on aspects such as tone, vibrato, articulation, and instrument choices. The library embraces loose tuning and retains expressive details that are often omitted in other virtual instruments, such as honking, squawking, warbling, cracked, and slurred notes. These nuances reflect the authentic playing styles of horn players from the ’40s through the ’70s.
