Blanketfort Audio has recently launched Melloharp, a complimentary instrument plugin compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems. This new plugin is an evolution of one of the company’s earliest Kontakt instruments, which was made public in 2016.
The original instrument was a fusion of a nylon string acoustic guitar and a damaged, rusted autoharp. It was designed around single samples that were stretched across the entire keyboard. However, Melloharp represents a significant departure from this initial design.
For the creation of Melloharp, the original instrument was multisampled in a pattern of threes: three round robins, three dynamic layers, and in thirds. This theme of threes is a defining characteristic of the new plugin. The samples were then processed through a Technics cassette deck and a Sony TCM-40DV, utilizing a ‘dub at double speed octave up, record back at half speed’ technique. This process resulted in three distinct tonal layers, further emphasizing the theme of threes.
Unlike the approach taken with SR Drums, where different instruments were created for each layer, all three layers of Melloharp were loaded into the same instrument. This allows users to blend the layers according to their preferences, offering a high degree of customization and flexibility.
