The Crow Hill Company has recently launched The Vertical Piano, a unique virtual instrument plugin for Mac and Windows. This innovative plugin is inspired by a piano that was used during World War II, and is designed to be a powerful tool for musical storytelling.
The Vertical Piano is more than just a virtual instrument. It carries a rich history, having been modelled after a piano that was robust enough to be parachuted onto battlefields and played by troops during the tumultuous times of World War II. This instrument is not just built for resilience, but also for creativity, aiming to become a favourite device for musicians and storytellers alike.
The plugin is packed with features that add personality and control to the music. At the heart of this creative environment is a tape emulation feature, which mimics a broken tape machine. This unique feature, along with other effects and features, forms an integral part of the plugin’s distinctive sound. The tape reel feature emulates a looping mechanism, while the speaker emulation control allows for adjustments of age and wear of tape and bias. The effects section is equipped with hand-picked retro delays, reverbs, and a granular synth. The EQ section is designed to be remarkably intuitive, and also includes saturation and compression controls.
The Vertical Piano was recorded using 1940’s style ribbon microphones, through a vintage Neve desk and mic pres in an exclusive studio space in the USA. The speakers, radios, and outboard were meticulously modelled from a collection of both pristinely and not-so-pristinely maintained communications equipment.
The plugin supports AU, VST3, VST, AAX formats and is compatible with macOS Catalina (10.15) through to Sonoma (14.x) (Apple Silicon and Intel compatible) and Windows 10 through to Windows 11. It requires 16 GB or more of RAM, a high-speed internet connection, up to 35 GB of free disk space and recommends an SSD if installing to an external drive.
The introductory price for The Vertical Piano is £129, a discount of 24% off the regular price. This offer is valid only until April 30.
