D16 Group has launched PunchBox 2, the latest version of its kick drum design instrument developed in collaboration with Sounds of Revolution and CFA-Sound. The update introduces expanded sound generation capabilities, workflow refinements, and a new factory library created specifically for this release.
PunchBox 2 is designed as a dedicated bass drum design engine that combines layered samples with multiple synthesis models. The instrument is built around four independent sound generators, allowing users to shape individual elements of a kick drum, including transient, body, and tail components. These generators integrate both sample-based material and synthesis engines, including analog-inspired models and wavetable-based shaping.
All sound sources are routed through a flexible effects rack and routing system. This structure enables detailed processing and signal flow control within a single interface. The design focuses on precise editing of each layer while maintaining an integrated workflow for complete kick construction.
The included factory library features a collection of presets and drum sounds created by sound designers from Sounds of Revolution and CFA-Sound. According to the developer, the library covers a range of electronic music styles, including EDM, techno, house, and trance. The content is intended to demonstrate the scope of the engine while providing ready-to-use kick and drum sounds.
An advanced editor section forms a central part of PunchBox 2. The instrument includes a multistage envelope system that allows users to modulate parameters over time. This enables detailed shaping of pitch, amplitude, filter characteristics, and other parameters across the different generators and effects modules.
The editor also provides real-time waveform visualization with overlays, allowing users to monitor changes as adjustments are made. Modulation can be applied across generators and effects, supporting evolving or dynamically shaped kick designs.
Workflow updates in PunchBox 2 include:
- A sticky sample browser designed to keep sound selection accessible during editing
- Global presets for complete configurations
- Dedicated sub-presets for individual layers or components
These features are intended to support faster assembly and refinement of kick sounds without leaving the main working environment.
The instrument also introduces a back panel section focused on routing and output control. Users can route individual layers or the full kick signal to separate outputs within their DAW. This allows independent processing and mixing of each element.
Additional output trims are available for gain staging at the layer level. This provides control over signal levels before external processing or integration into more complex routing setups.
PunchBox 2 is available as a software instrument for modern DAW environments. The update builds on the original concept by expanding synthesis options, editing depth, routing flexibility, and included sound content, while maintaining a dedicated focus on bass drum design.
PunchBox 2 is available for €99, with an introductory price of €79.
