Darkpalace Studio releases Piranha multiband waveshaper and clipper plugin.

News: Darkpalace Studio releases Piranha multiband waveshaper and clipper plugin.

Darkpalace Studio has launched PIRANHA, a multi-band waveshaping plugin designed for detailed distortion and saturation processing. The plugin focuses on flexible three-band operation, combining linear phase crossovers with a wide range of shaping options across Windows, macOS, and Linux.

PIRANHA is built around a three-band architecture, allowing users to divide incoming audio into independently adjustable frequency regions. Each band can be processed separately using linear phase crossovers, which are designed to maintain phase coherence while targeting specific parts of the spectrum.

Within each band, users can apply a variety of waveshaping processes. The plugin supports symmetrical and asymmetrical waveshaping, with adjustable offset controls that enable independent treatment of the upper and lower portions of the waveform. Threshold controls can be unlinked, allowing more detailed asymmetrical shaping on a per-band basis.

The available processing options include several filter and transfer curve types, such as:

  • Hard and soft clipping modes
  • Bitcrushing algorithms
  • Various transfer curve shapes for distortion and saturation

These tools are intended for shaping harmonic content, introducing distortion, or modifying dynamic characteristics across selected frequency ranges.

PIRANHA also includes per-band dry and wet mix controls, enabling users to blend processed and unprocessed signals within each frequency band. This design supports parallel-style processing without the need for additional routing in the host environment.

A dedicated Delta mode, labelled DIFF, allows users to monitor only the difference between the processed and unprocessed signal. This function is designed to help users identify precisely what the processing stage is adding or altering in the signal path.

The plugin features an emphasis control intended to highlight selected frequency regions, particularly when working with more aggressive or harmonically rich material. According to the developer, this allows users to focus on specific tonal characteristics within the processed signal.

On the technical side, PIRANHA uses hardware-accelerated rendering via OpenGL. The graphical interface is fully resizable and responsive, and multiple themes are included. Users can also create custom themes. The rendering approach is designed to offload graphical tasks from the CPU, reserving processing resources for audio operations.

PIRANHA supports the following formats and platforms:

  • VST3, AU, CLAP, and LV2 plugin formats
  • Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems

The plugin is compatible with a wide range of host applications that support these formats, positioning it for use in both studio production and sound design workflows.

PIRANHA is available from the Darkpalace Studio website for $53.
