Eventide has launched Music Mouse, a standalone application for Windows and macOS that transforms mouse or trackpad movements into musical output. Based on Laurie Spiegel’s 1986 Intelligent Musical Instrument software, the new version brings the concept to modern computer platforms.
Music Mouse is designed to generate melody and counterpoint in real time using simple horizontal and vertical mouse movements. Independent motion along each axis produces interlocking musical lines, while built-in harmonic logic maintains tonal coherence. The application enables users to play music directly through gesture rather than step-based programming.
The software can be used as a standalone instrument, processed through external effects, or configured as a MIDI source. It is capable of driving a DAW or external hardware, generating MIDI data intended to support improvisation and harmonic exploration. Music Mouse works with Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and other MIDI-enabled software and hardware synthesizers.
The application supports up to four simultaneous notes and includes ten pattern sequences. Four rhythmic treatments are available:
Six harmonic modes are provided:
- Chromatic
- Octatonic
- Middle Eastern
- Diatonic
- Pentatonic
- Quartal
Music Mouse also includes parameter presets by Laurie Spiegel, along with more than 30 synthesizer presets derived from her original Yamaha DX7 and TX7 patches. A printable keyboard map is provided to assist with performance and control reference.
Technical features include a resizable user interface, visual feedback for computer keyboard presses, and contextual guidance via a hint bar. Users can enable optional visual separators around the polyphonic cursor, and border keyboards display active MIDI notes. The layout can be configured for left- or right-handed operation.
The application supports MIDI connectivity to DAWs and external hardware, including MIDI Clock Sync. In addition to mouse and trackpad gestures, musical input can be shaped using computer keyboard presses, with notes repositioned dynamically via cursor movement.
Music Mouse is available as a one-time purchase and can be downloaded immediately. It is compatible with Windows 11 or later and macOS 10.15 or later.
Music Mouse is currently available with a 34% introductory discount using the code MOUSEY. The offer runs until April 30th.
