FlickSwitch Audio has launched Liminal, a dynamic threshold processor designed to give producers and sound designers detailed control over how audio responds to amplitude and transient information. Built around a three-lane processing architecture, the plugin separates signals by intensity and allows independent routing and treatment of each layer.
Liminal is based on an amplitude-driven engine that splits incoming audio into three distinct lanes according to signal strength and transient behaviour. Rather than applying processing uniformly across an entire signal, the plugin enables users to shape quieter details, mid-level body, and louder transient moments independently. This structure is intended to preserve the overall character of a performance while allowing focused adjustments to specific dynamic layers.
At the centre of the interface is a visual three-lane system that displays how audio is being divided by amplitude and transient strength. Each lane can be routed to its own processing path, making it possible to treat attack, sustain, and low-level detail separately. This approach supports a range of workflows, from subtle dynamic refinement to more pronounced transformations within a single sound source.
Liminal also includes per-lane input detection EQ, allowing users to determine which frequency ranges trigger each dynamic layer. With selectable low-pass and high-pass detection modes, the processor can be configured to respond differently to bass content, midrange material, or high-frequency transient information. This provides additional control over how the plugin reacts to various elements within a mix.
According to FlickSwitch Audio, Liminal is designed for both practical production tasks and experimental sound design. Example use cases include:
- Enhancing the impact and detail of drum material
- Separating attack and sustain characteristics in guitars
- Reshaping synth textures through amplitude-based routing
- Introducing movement to vocal performances
- Creating dynamic effects that follow the contour of a performance
Key features of Liminal include:
- Three amplitude-driven processing lanes
- Per-lane input detection EQ with low-pass and high-pass modes
- Dynamic signal routing based on transient and amplitude behaviour
- Independent effects routing per lane
- EQ solo monitoring for trigger shaping
- Randomisation tools for preset generation
- MIDI lane assignment and latch mode
- Full DAW automation support
Liminal marks the first major plugin release from FlickSwitch Audio, a Sydney-based music software company focused on creative audio tools. The developer states that its design philosophy centres on reducing workflow friction and encouraging experimentation while maintaining a clear and responsive interface.
