GForce Software has recently released an update for its Oberheim SEM virtual instrument plugin and standalone for Windows and Mac, bringing it to version 1.6.
The update aims to recreate the iconic sound and simplicity of the original Oberheim Synthesizer Expander Module (SEM-1), developed by Tom Oberheim in 1974, which has been used by numerous legendary musicians over the decades.
Tom Oberheim’s initial goal when creating the SEM-1 was to develop a synthesizer that not only sounded great but was also extremely user-friendly. The GForce Oberheim SEM aims to uphold this ethos, offering a simple monophonic synth that allows users to shape incredible sounds instantly. With Tom Oberheim’s seal of approval, users can be assured of its authenticity. The updated version also includes more than 400 categorised patches, providing users with instant inspiration.
The GForce team first collaborated with Tom Oberheim and Marcus Ryle, an influential Oberheim engineer from the 80s, during the creation of the GForce Oberheim OB-E® v2. During this collaboration, Tom and Marcus expressed their belief that there were no software emulations of the SEM that accurately recreated the sound and ethos of the original monophonic SEM. Motivated by this, the GForce team, under the close guidance of Tom and Marcus, developed the GForce Oberheim SEM to provide an experience that is truly authentic to the original instrument.
