HD Instruments has launched Spectdrum, a rhythmic spectral gate plugin for Windows and macOS. The software is designed to transform sustained sounds into rhythmically sequenced material by dividing the incoming signal into multiple frequency bands and triggering them as independent drum voices.
Spectdrum separates any sustained audio source into four distinct frequency bands: Sub, Low-Mid, High-Mid and Air. Each band functions as its own drum voice and is controlled by an individual step sequencer. The plugin does not rely on samples or synthesis. Instead, all rhythmic elements are derived directly from the input signal, meaning that each groove retains the tonal and textural characteristics of the original source.
According to HD Instruments, this approach allows pads, drones, string patches, vocals, and field recordings to generate rhythmic patterns that reflect their unique spectral content. Every percussive element is carved from the incoming audio rather than introduced externally.
Each of the four bands operates with an independent step sequencer offering between 1 and 32 steps. Because the sequencer lengths can differ per band, users can create tightly synchronized patterns or polyrhythmic sequences that evolve over time before repeating. Patterns respond to MIDI input and can be triggered or switched using a keyboard, enabling instrument-style performance control.
Spectdrum includes the following features:
- Four spectral bands, each with adjustable frequency range, filter, pitch shifter, stereo width and drive controls
- Polyrhythmic step sequencer with 1 to 32 steps per band, independent lengths, per-step velocity, accents and swing
- Hand-drawn volume, filter, pan and pitch envelopes per band, editable as free curves
In addition to its sequencing capabilities, the plugin provides per-band reverb and delay sends. Both effects incorporate pitch shifting within their feedback loops, allowing for further tonal variation derived from the original material.
The master section includes compression, distortion, equalisation and a look-ahead maximizer. These tools are intended to shape and control the overall output after the spectral and rhythmic processing stages.
A Learn function is available to analyse the spectral content of the incoming audio and automatically position the four frequency bands accordingly. This feature is designed to streamline setup when working with different types of source material.
The user interface is resizable and offers both light and dark visual themes. A built-in help system is included to provide guidance directly within the plugin.
Spectdrum is available in VST3 format for Windows and macOS, and as an Audio Unit on macOS.
Spectdrum is available now at an introductory price of 69 USD, with a regular price of 99 USD. A single licence allows installation on up to three of the owner’s computers. Activation requires a one-time online check, after which the plugin runs fully offline.
