Impact Soundworks has launched Chro-Nyx, a virtual synthesizer available as a plugin for Native Instruments’ free Reaktor Player. This release brings a variety of oscillator engines, filters, effects, and modulation tools into a single, layered interface.
Chro-Nyx emulates the design of classic hardware synthesizers, blending elements from the Roland JP-8080, Jupiter-8, Access Virus, Nord Modular 2 and others. It installs into the free Reaktor Player environment, making its engine accessible without additional host software.
The core sound engine features two main oscillators with 31 modes, covering analog-style waveforms, FM, ring modulation and more. A dedicated sub oscillator and external audio input on Oscillator 2 expand sonic possibilities, while adjustable phase controls allow for precise layering.
The filter section comprises dual filters with split, series or parallel routing, plus a third post-FX filter. Users can select low-pass, band-pass or high-pass slopes and choose from five character presets. Eighteen distinct drive types, from subtle overdrive to aggressive fuzz, are available, alongside a boost function for added intensity.
An onboard effects rack includes chorus, delay, reverb, multiband compression, phasers and flangers. The original vocoder design is retained and expanded with a 12-band filterbank and extra shaping controls. Two analog-modeled shelving and peak EQ stages sit before and after the effect chain for precise tonal balance.
Modulation is managed through dual LFOs capable of audio-rate and tempo-synced modulation, as well as step sequencing, arpeggiation and trance gating. A 16-slot modulation matrix supports standard routing and Eurorack-style math operations, enabling intricate parameter interactions.
The interface offers an Easy mode with essential controls for beginners and an Edit mode with full parameter access for advanced sound designers.
Development was led by Jasper Broeks (Pulsecraft), a Dutch DJ and sound designer active in trance and hardcore since 2004. Broeks has performed at festivals including Defqon, Decibel Outdoor and Ground Zero, and brings his experience to the design and usability of Chro-Nyx.
