Phase Fiasco has launched Annulus, a polyphonic resonator and effects engine for macOS and Windows. The instrument is built around a physical modeling core inspired by Mutable Instruments’ Rings module and is offered as a free download.
Annulus combines a polyphonic resonator with an integrated effects chain and a dynamic visual interface designed to respond to incoming audio. The developer describes it as a tool intended for sound designers who focus on evolving textures rather than preset-based workflows.
At the core of Annulus is a faithful implementation of the physical modeling engine behind Mutable Instruments’ Rings, a Eurorack module known for its approach to resonant synthesis. In Annulus, this engine forms the basis of six distinct modes, each representing a different physical model and sonic identity.
The plugin offers:
- Six resonator modes based on physical modeling principles
- Polyphonic operation
- An integrated effects chain
- A visual interface that reacts to the generated sound
Each mode is designed to present a different resonant structure, enabling a range of tonal and textural outcomes depending on input material and parameter settings. The focus on physical modeling allows users to shape sound through simulated acoustic behaviors rather than traditional subtractive or sample-based methods.
Annulus is available in the following formats:
- macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel): VST3 and AU
- Windows: VST3
The developer notes that Annulus is currently untested in wider public use and has not undergone a formal beta or structured testing phase. As such, users may encounter bugs or inconsistent behavior depending on their system configuration or DAW environment. Feedback and bug reports are encouraged, with users asked to include details such as operating system, DAW, and a description of the issue encountered.
