Katz Praatz has launched Jazz Sketch version 1.8, an update to the standalone Java-based chord sequencer. Jazz Sketch is designed for arranging jazz chord progressions and tension chords, with MIDI export for use in a digital audio workstation.
Version 1.8 adds 192 chord progressions to the 1,224 included in version 1.7, bringing the library to 1,416 jazz chord progressions. The update also adds 48 tension chords, increasing the total from 168 to 216.
The release introduces save and load functions for chord progression data. Users can store arranged progressions and recall them later for further organisation, playback, or editing.
Jazz Sketch provides a chord-sequencing environment in which users arrange supplied progressions and individual chords into a sequence. The completed sequence can be exported as a MIDI file, allowing its note data to be played back or edited in a DAW. The software operates independently of a DAW and is not a plug-in.
The included progression library covers harmonic approaches including:
- II-V-I progressions, tritone substitutions, secondary dominants, and secondary subdominants
- Deceptive resolutions, modal interchange, parallel modal shifts, and pivot chords
- Altered dominants and turnarounds
Katz Praatz states that Jazz Sketch is intended for creating arrangements associated with styles such as Swing, Bebop, Bossa Nova, Jazz Blues, and Neo Soul. The application also includes annotations for the active chord or progression, presenting harmonic information during playback for users exploring or practising jazz harmony.
Jazz Sketch is supplied as a .jar file and is written in Java. It requires Java or Java Runtime Environment version 8 or later. The developer lists Windows, macOS, and Linux as supported operating systems, provided a compatible Java installation is available. A laptop or desktop computer with a monitor measuring 13 inches or larger is listed as the hardware requirement. Tablet devices that do not run Windows or macOS, including iPad and Galaxy Tab models, are not supported.
Jazz Sketch version 1.8 is priced at $7.49 USD.
