Luna Co. Audio has launched TapeMachine, a free analog tape emulation plugin for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The plugin is available as an open source project and is designed for use in modern digital audio workstations.
TapeMachine is described by the developer as a professional tape emulation plugin intended to recreate the behavior and tonal characteristics of classic reel-to-reel tape machines in a digital environment. The plugin uses physically modeled saturation calibrated against published measurements from Studer A800 and Ampex ATR-102 machines.
According to Luna Co. Audio, TapeMachine includes two modeled tape machines. Swiss800 is based on the Studer A800 MkIII, while Classic102 is modeled after the Ampex ATR-102. Each model is intended to reflect the operational and tonal differences associated with the original hardware units.
The plugin also includes four selectable tape formulations, each with distinct characteristics:
- Type 456
- GP9
- Type 911
- Type 250
TapeMachine provides multiple signal paths and includes three professional equalization standards. Separate controls are available for wow and flutter, allowing users to adjust pitch modulation effects independently. The plugin includes 15 presets organised into five categories: Subtle, Warm, Character, Lo-Fi, and Mastering.
The user interface is designed to reflect the appearance of traditional studio tape equipment. Visual elements include VU meters, animated tape reels, vintage-style knobs, and brushed metal panels.
From a technical perspective, the saturation engine is based on a Langevin function, with harmonic behavior calibrated to match published total harmonic distortion measurements for the referenced hardware. Processing is handled using a 3-band architecture. Luna Co. Audio reports typical CPU usage of approximately 2 to 4 percent per instance and memory usage of around 15 MB per instance, depending on the system.
TapeMachine has been tested with Reaper, Ardour, Carla, and a standalone JUCE-based application. The developer notes that it is also expected to function in Bitwig Studio, Studio One, FL Studio, Ableton Live, Cubase, Nuendo, Logic Pro, and GarageBand.
The plugin is released under the GPL-2.0 open source license and is available for Linux, Windows, and macOS. Supported formats include VST3 and LV2 on Linux, VST3 on Windows, and VST3 and AU on macOS. Supported sample rates range from 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz.
System requirements include a 64-bit DAW with compatible plugin support. On Linux, glibc 2.31 or newer is required, covering distributions such as Ubuntu 20.04 and later, Debian 11 and later, and Fedora 34 and later. Windows systems require Windows 10 or newer, while macOS systems require macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later.
Luna Co. Audio states that TapeMachine is an independent emulation inspired by classic tape machines and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Studer, Ampex, or any hardware manufacturer. Installation files and source code are available via the project’s GitHub repository.
TapeMachine is available as a free download.
