Minimal Audio has launched a new synthesizer plugin, Current, which is available exclusively through a subscription model. The multi-engine synthesizer offers a variety of features including five synthesis engines, powerful morphing filter modules, and a modular FX engine, among others.
Update: Minimal Audio relaunches Current synth with rent-to-own and perpetual license options.
Unfortunatley, the decision to make this a subscription-only offer has not gone down well with the community and there has been quite a severe public backlash. The plugin itself seems highly capable and we’ve yet to see if Minimal Audio decide to make any changes to their offer.
The Synth
Current’s core comprises five synthesis engines: virtual analog, 2-oscillator wavetable, stereo granular, sampler, and additive sub-oscillator. These engines are arranged in a fixed signal path consisting of three blocks: wavetables, granular, and sub + sampler. Each engine offers a wide array of useful parameters.
The includes two powerful morphing filter modules with over 50 filter modes. These include many filter models from Minimal Audio’s Rift FX plugin, such as classic types, vowel, comb, and more. Users have the flexibility to decide which oscillators are routed into the filters and whether they operate in serial or parallel. Current also excels in modulation, with nine mod slots each carrying a modulator type.
The synthesizer features a modular FX engine with nine slots and a fully customizable signal path. Users can access well-known effects such as Cluster Delay, Hybrid Filter, Morph EQ, Rift Distortion, and new ones like the feature-rich Swarm Reverb.
Current comes with a number of presets and users can expand their options with in-built access to Stream. This feature allows users to download new presets, samples, and wavetables directly within the plugin.
At this time, Current is only available through a subscription model, priced at $15 a month or $120 a year.
