Mock Band has refreshed Mock Band, its browser-based practice accompaniment application for drums, bass and chords. The updated version is designed to provide editable backing setups for instrumental practice, with recorded acoustic drum sounds, synthesised rhythm guitar and controls for adjusting arrangements while playing.
Mock Band is hosted online and can be used in a web browser without creating an account or downloading software. It is designed as an accompaniment tool rather than a plugin, DAW, native mobile application, AI song generator, or source of note-for-note song transcriptions.
The application combines drum, bass and chord parts in editable practice arrangements. Users can load a setup containing four sections, then change between those sections at the next bar during playback. Controls are available for tempo, key, time signature, swing and drum fills.
The refresh includes setups intended for styles and rhythmic approaches including galloping metal, doom, death metal and progressive 7/8 grooves. These setups can be edited to suit an individual practice session rather than functioning as fixed recordings.
Mock Band provides both on-screen controls and text commands. Optional voice and MIDI control are also supported where the user’s browser and device provide the required compatibility. The original synthesised drum kit remains available in situations where the recorded drum sounds cannot be loaded.
The September update adds shareable setup links and five-minute genre-focused practice guides. Opening a shared setup link allows the recipient to inspect its settings, while explicit Load and Start actions are required before playback begins. Shared links do not automatically start audio or overwrite a user’s saved scenes.
The hosted version of Mock Band is currently free to use. Its source code is private.
