News: New release: Drone Maker, a medieval drone engine by Fabula Audio.

Fabula Audio has launched Drone Maker, a new virtual instrument designed to generate evolving drone textures from a curated selection of acoustic sources. The instrument is available in AU, VST3, and standalone formats for macOS and Windows.

Drone Maker is built around recordings of hurdy-gurdy, church organ, bagpipes, bowed strings, choir, and bells. These sources are processed into sustained, slow-moving textures intended for atmospheric and ambient applications. The instrument is designed to support the creation of layered drones for cinematic, experimental, medieval-inspired, and ambient music contexts.

At the core of the engine is a custom drone generator that shapes the recorded material into evolving soundscapes. Users can further sculpt these textures using an integrated set of sound design tools, including:

  • Granular freeze processing
  • Dual LFO modulation
  • Built-in reverb and delay

In addition to the primary drone engine, Drone Maker includes a separate layer of 16 independent ambience beds. These layers can be blended with the main drone textures to add environmental depth and variation.

The instrument also allows users to import their own audio material into the engine. This enables the creation of custom drones derived from any source, extending the scope of the instrument beyond its included acoustic recordings.

Drone Maker ships with 54 factory presets. Two optional expansion packs are available separately:

  • Nox, focused on horror and dungeon synth-inspired textures
  • Reliquary, centred on sacred and ambient medieval drone material

The graphical interface reflects Fabula Audio’s focus on medieval themes, featuring illustrated marginalia-style characters interacting with the instrument’s controls.

Drone Maker does not require copy protection, user accounts, or activation procedures. It runs as an AU and VST3 plugin as well as a standalone application on macOS and Windows systems.

Launch pricing is currently available. Further details can be found on the developer’s website.
