Newfangled Audio, distributed by Eventide, has launched FIXATE:MIDRANGE, a dynamic EQ plugin designed to address common midrange issues in audio production. The plugin is available for macOS and Windows and focuses on automatic detection and correction of tonal imbalances within the midrange spectrum.
FIXATE:MIDRANGE is described as an intelligent midrange correction tool built to resolve issues such as mud, thinness, honk, nasalness, harshness, and broader spectral imbalance. According to the developer, each of these problem areas is handled by a dedicated dynamic processor that activates only when the relevant issue is detected in the incoming audio signal.
The plugin follows a two-step workflow. Users can initiate an analysis process that listens to the track, identifies midrange problems, and applies corrective processing with a single click. Visual feedback is provided through a real-time resonance meter and an integrated HINTMAP display, offering insight into detected issues and applied corrections.
At the core of FIXATE:MIDRANGE are six intelligent dynamic processors targeting:
- Mud
- Thinness
- Honk
- Nasalness
- Harshness
- Spectral Balance
The resonance detection system is modeled on critical-band analysis based on human hearing. The plugin also includes independent Mid and Side channel processing, allowing users to address spatial elements of the midrange separately.
A dedicated Balance section is designed to preserve the overall character of a mix while refining tonal content. Spectral balance correction operates across 15 frequency bands and supports learnable profiles. Users can drag a reference track directly into the plugin, allowing FIXATE:MIDRANGE to analyze and learn its tonal characteristics automatically.
The plugin includes predefined Match Profiles tailored for mastering, vocals, guitar, and other sources. Users can also create their own profiles from reference material. This allows FIXATE:MIDRANGE to be applied both in full mix scenarios and on individual tracks, depending on the intended workflow.
Additional features include:
- One-button ANALYZE and FIX workflow
- Per-band Enable, Solo, and Delta listening tools
- Midrange Focus Listening Mode for isolated midrange auditioning
- Automatic Gain Compensation and A/B comparison
- Full preset librarian with categories, tags, descriptions, UNDO, and A/B comparison
- Fully resizable user interface with selectable color options
- Professional presets for mastering, vocals, and additional applications
FIXATE:MIDRANGE is compatible with Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.14 or later, supporting both Intel and Apple Silicon systems. Supported formats include AAX 64-bit, VST3 64-bit, and AU 64-bit where applicable. An iLok account is required for authorization, though a physical dongle is not necessary. The plugin is designed to operate with major DAWs including Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Cubase, FL Studio, and Reaper.
A 14-day demo version is available for users who wish to evaluate the plugin.
FIXATE:MIDRANGE is currently available at an introductory price of $79, representing 43% off the regular price of $139. The introductory offer runs until June 24th.
