News: NoiseRoom UIO releases Andes JX, a free open-source polyphonic synthesizer

NoiseRoom UIO has launched Andes JX, a free and open-source polyphonic subtractive synthesizer developed in Ecuador. The instrument combines oscillator, filtering, modulation, and performance controls, while also serving as a platform for studying audio DSP and plugin development.

Andes JX uses two oscillator models based on PolyBLEP and DPW techniques. These methods are used in digital oscillator design to generate waveforms while managing aliasing behaviour.

The synthesizer includes filtering on a per-voice basis, with a state-variable filter and a nonlinear Moog-style ladder filter available. Its architecture also provides modulation controls and performance-focused parameters for shaping and playing sounds.

NoiseRoom UIO has included 33 factory presets, with names and sound concepts inspired by locations across the Ecuadorian Andes. The preset collection accompanies the instrument’s broader regional and educational context.

The project was created as both a musical software instrument and an educational resource. Its complete source code is available under the GNU GPLv3 licence, allowing users and students to examine the implementation of its DSP and plugin-development components.

Andes JX was recently presented at the AES Latin American Conference 2026 in Lima. The presentation formed part of a wider project focused on open-source tools for audio DSP education.
