Ocean Swift has announced Dev Ocean Modular, a modular synthesis and sound design environment built around an open, canvas-based workflow. The software combines a comprehensive module library, integrated effects, and AI-assisted patching within a single platform.
Dev Ocean Modular is designed as an infinite canvas where users can build instruments and sound design systems by connecting modules freely across the workspace. The application is powered by a bare metal C++ DSP engine, developed to provide low-latency performance and a clear signal path for complex modular configurations.
At the core of the platform is an extensive module library covering multiple synthesis methods and sound processing tools. Available sound sources include wavetable oscillators with morphing and sample-driven capabilities, six-operator FM synthesis, additive sine banks, seven-saw supersaw generators, and physically modeled string instruments. The system also incorporates granular processing through Nebula modules designed to transform and time-stretch source material into evolving stereo textures.
The filtering section spans nine distinct families, including ladder-style filters, state-variable designs, vocal formant filters, and comb variants. Modulation and routing are fully integrated into the canvas environment, with visual feedback that allows users to see signal movement directly within patch cables. Cables display activity and indicate mono or polyphonic signal flow through color changes.
Dev Ocean Modular includes a comprehensive suite of built-in effects intended for both sound shaping and final processing stages. These include:
- A multi-mode reverb engine with five algorithm types, including plate, spring, and hall variations
- A 13-effect modulation section featuring chorus, flanger, and rotary-style processing
- Ping-pong delay, compression, de-essing, transient shaping, and brickwall limiting modules
The platform is structured as a full ecosystem rather than a standalone modular rack. A browser system with tagging and search functionality allows users to categorize patches by descriptive attributes and filter large collections efficiently. Projects are self-contained and retain associated samples to ensure portability between systems.
Ocean Swift has also integrated an AI-powered assistant named MaYa, built on Claude. MaYa is designed to analyze patches, add and connect modules, assist with troubleshooting signal flow, organize projects, and provide explanations related to synthesis techniques. The assistant operates alongside the canvas as part of the workflow rather than as a separate utility.
Additional features include:
- The ability to collapse groups of modules into reusable “Capsules” for building higher-level instruments
- Wireless routing connections across the canvas
- Custom scripting support for creating user-defined modules that integrate directly into patches
- A live Theme Editor for adjusting the application’s visual appearance in real time
Dev Ocean Modular also includes several unconventional modulation and signal sources. These include shortwave radio input, live market data streams, and game controller integration with multi-output mapping. The platform supports patch playback within external DAWs through a lightweight VST3 and AU Bridge plugin, enabling tempo synchronization, automation, and audio rendering within host sessions.
The software ships with a growing library of hundreds of presets and patches, ranging from complete instruments to effects and modulation setups. An online user library and downloadable content system are planned as part of the broader ecosystem.
Dev Ocean Modular runs fully unlocked in Demo Mode. The complete instrument and module library are accessible without feature restrictions, watermarking, or time limits, allowing users to explore the full system prior to activation.
Dev Ocean Modular is available for €199, with a limited-time introductory price of €129.99.
