Osterhouse Sounds has launched Penumbra Strings, a new sample library for the full version of Kontakt. Designed as a collection of dark-toned string textures, the library is currently available with an introductory discount.
Penumbra Strings is built for Kontakt 7.10.9 and requires the full, paid version of Kontakt. It is not compatible with the free Kontakt Player. The library is delivered via Pulse Downloader.
The instrument is described as a palette of darker hues intended for modern string writing. It features 12 complementary articulations recorded from five solo string instruments. These articulations are arranged into a grid of tiles, allowing users to combine and layer sounds within a single interface.
Within the main canvas, users can directly modify playback parameters such as:
- Sample start points
- Loop ranges
- Reverse playback
A control panel along the bottom of the interface provides additional sound-shaping options. This section is integrated with a preset browser, and each preset reconfigures the entire instrument. When selected, a preset determines the articulations loaded in the grid and adjusts all associated control settings in the lower panel.
According to the developer, the included presets are intentionally processed and non-realistic in character. The library is designed for hybrid scoring contexts and other productions where string textures that diverge from traditional ensemble sounds are required.
Penumbra Strings focuses on providing an alternative approach to string writing through its structured grid layout and comprehensive preset system, offering composers a cohesive environment for building layered textures from solo source material.
