The Guilt Device is a macro-driven effect plugin designed for guitar and other sound sources. Available for macOS and Windows in VST3, AU, and standalone formats, it centres on a single control that shapes multiple processing parameters simultaneously.
Developed as what the creator describes as an “emotional degradation unit,” The Guilt Device combines reverse delay, granular processing, pitch drift, ambience, damping, and signal degradation within a unified engine. Rather than functioning as a conventional delay or reverb, the plugin is designed to reinterpret incoming audio through layered processing that evolves as the main macro control is adjusted.
At the core of the plugin is the Guilt knob. This macro maps several processes to a single gesture, allowing users to increase or decrease the intensity of the combined effect. As the control is raised, reverse delay, feedback, granular smear, pitch drift, dark-chamber ambience, decay, and instability move together in a coordinated manner.
Six selectable modes alter how the processing engine responds:
- Confession
- Buried
- Aftermath
- Relapse
- The Weight
- Absolution
Each mode adjusts the character of the internal processing, offering different variations on how the signal is captured, transformed, and reintroduced. The interface also includes A/B state switching, oversampling up to 4x, and clickless bypass.
The processing architecture incorporates several distinct components:
- Reverse and granular processing: A reverse delay combined with a granular smear engine designed to blur the distinction between the original signal and its processed counterpart.
- Dark chamber ambience: A Schroeder-style ambience algorithm intended to provide spatial depth and resonance.
- Collapse and erase stages: Degradation and instability processes that introduce controlled signal breakdown.
The plugin interface is hand illustrated and available in both dark and light themes. Users can resize the interface to suit their workspace, and input and output metering is included for level monitoring.
The Guilt Device is designed for use in styles such as dark ambient, industrial, doom, post-rock, and cinematic scoring, as well as for general sound design applications. Factory presets include Ghost Behind Each Note, Tape Grief, Memory Furnace, The Weight of One Note, and Aftermath Cathedral.
The plugin is available as VST3, AU, and standalone on macOS, and as VST3 and standalone on Windows.
A 14-day fully working free trial is available. The Guilt Device can be purchased for $39 as a one-time payment, with a 7-day no-questions refund policy.
