Reason Studios has launched Reason Free, a no-cost version of its Reason Rack software for use as a VST3, AU, or AAX plugin. The plugin brings 15 Reason instruments, effects, MIDI tools, and routing utilities to compatible DAWs on Windows and macOS.
Reason Free is designed to operate as a single Rack plugin within a host DAW, allowing users to combine its included devices through Reason’s patching and signal-routing environment. The Rack supports custom audio and control-voltage routing, modulation connections, and MIDI processing.
The release includes the following Rack devices:
- Europa Shapeshifting Synthesizer
- Kong Drum Designer
- ID-8 Songwriter’s Toolbox
- Monotone Bass Synthesizer
- Scream 4 Sound Destruction Unit
- The Echo
- Audiomatic Retro Transformer
- RV7000 Mk II Advanced Reverb
- MClass Maximizer
- Scales and Chords
- Combinator
- Pulsar Dual LFO
- Spider Audio Merger & Splitter
- Spider CV Merger & Splitter
- MIDI Out Device
Among the included tools, Scales and Chords is intended to create chord and scale-based MIDI material, while the ID-8 Songwriter’s Toolbox provides piano, bass, guitar, string, and synthesizer sounds in one device. The Combinator can be used to combine devices into custom patches, with user-created presets and Combinator patches remaining compatible with the Reason Rack in the full Reason DAW.
Reason Free is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats. Reason Studios lists support for major DAWs including Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Cubase, Fender Studio Pro, Bitwig, Reaper, and GarageBand.
The installer also includes the free Reason DAW. This version supports up to 16 audio or instrument tracks and includes a multi-track sequencer, Blocks mode, comping, time-stretching, transposition, Vocal Edit, audio slicing and quantisation, a mixer, VST2 and VST3 support, and Ableton Link.
