Reason Studios has launched re-release of their iconic sample editor and slicer, ReCycle, now available as a free software. Originally launched in 1994, ReCycle was a pivotal tool for producers of grassroots electronic music in the 1990s. This updated version brings modern enhancements while maintaining its core functionalities.
ReCycle is a sample editor and slicer tool that allows users to dissect loops into their rhythmic components. This enables producers to quantize, rearrange, or completely transform their sampled grooves. The latest version of ReCycle has been updated with high-resolution graphics and compatibility with Apple Silicon, alongside backend improvements for enhanced performance.
The software includes built-in effects such as a Transient Shaper, EQ, Envelope, and a stretch feature that extends the tail end of each slice in a loop. These features provide users with a versatile toolkit for manipulating audio samples creatively. Once edited, loops can be saved as REX files, a format that has become a standard for loop handling in most modern digital audio workstations (DAWs).
The REX file format, native to ReCycle, retains the original audio of the loop, the slices applied, and any effects or processing added within ReCycle. It uses a non-lossy compression technique, which helps conserve hard drive space without compromising audio quality. The REX technology is widely supported by third-party applications, making it a de facto standard in the industry. Popular DAWs supporting REX technology include Reason, Ableton Live, Avid Pro Tools, Image-Line FL Studio, Steinberg Cubase, Presonus Studio One, and Native Instruments Kontakt, among others.
To run ReCycle, users need a fast and stable internet connection, with system requirements including 4 GB of RAM (though 8 GB or more is recommended), and 6.5 GB of free system disk space for the Reason application. An additional 20 GB of free system disk space is recommended for additional content and scratch disk space. A monitor with at least 1280 x 768 resolution is also required. For Mac users, the software requires macOS 10.15 (64-bit) or later, an Intel or Apple Silicon Mac with a multi-core processor, and a CoreAudio compliant audio interface or built-in audio hardware. Windows users need Windows 10/11 (64-bit) with the latest update, and an Intel, AMD, or Windows on ARM CPU.
In celebration of ReCycle’s re-release, Reason Studios is hosting a beat challenge titled ‘ReCycle the Beat.’ This contest is hosted by Grammy-winning producer Don Cannon, offering an exciting opportunity for producers to showcase their skills using the newly available software.
ReCycle is now available for free, previously priced at $99.
