Sample Logic has launched Animation Station Pro, a plugin that combines virtual instrument hosting, MIDI sequencing, and effect parameter animation. The software expands on the Animation Station 2.0 step-animation workflow by allowing compatible instruments and effects to be loaded and controlled within a single plugin environment.
Animation Station Pro is designed to host VST and Audio Unit virtual instruments, alongside audio effect plugins, and apply MIDI patterns and modulation to their parameters. Its three main components are a universal instrument host, an intelligent MIDI sequencer and arpeggiator, and an FX Animation Engine.
The instrument host allows users to load virtual instruments directly into Animation Station Pro, while the FX section accommodates effect plugins. The MIDI and effects-animation functions can be used independently or together. For example, users can apply the sequencing tools without loading effects, animate an effect chain without using MIDI sequencing, or combine both processes in one setup.
Each setup can be stored as a Channel Preset, which recalls the hosted instrument, effects chain, MIDI pattern, and parameter animation. This is intended to preserve complete configurations for studio work or performance use.
The MIDI sequencer and arpeggiator include multi-directional patterns, stutters, chromatic transposition, and real-time ABCD pattern switching. Four patterns can be assigned and switched during playback, including through key switches. Users can also set individual step lengths and attributes, move steps within a sequence, and use copy, paste, reset, and randomisation functions.
For effect processing, the FX Animation Engine can modulate hosted plugin parameters using step sequencers, LFOs, and the arpeggiator-based animation tools. Sample Logic cites applications such as automated filter movements, delay changes, and reverb parameter modulation.
Animation Station Pro also includes features carried over from Animation Station 2.0, including customizable key switches, mod-wheel modulation, octave and chromatic transpose modes, and pattern randomisation. The “Breaking Borders” preset collection, designed by Ben Aylon and previously included with Animation Station 2.0, is available for use with both the MIDI and FX Animation engines.
For Logic Pro users, which hosts Audio Unit plugins natively, Animation Station Pro can host VST instruments and effects internally. This allows VST-only plugins, including titles without Audio Unit versions, to be loaded within an Animation Station Pro instance in a Logic Pro session.
Animation Station Pro is available for $119, with an introductory price of $89.
