Schallenberg Engineering has launched Tribal, a new percussion sample library focused on natural materials and direct rhythmic expression. The collection brings together a range of drums and hand-played instruments designed to reflect the fundamental connection between rhythm and physical sound sources.
Tribal is built around recordings of hands, sticks, wood, skin, and metal, capturing simple acoustic sources that have been used for rhythm-making across cultures for centuries. The developer states that the library focuses on direct sound, strong attacks, and natural resonance.
The library includes 43 individual instruments. These range from deep low drums and resonant shaker drums to dry stick articulations, brushes, and bright chimes. The recordings aim to provide a clear and defined percussive character suitable for integration into a wide range of musical contexts.
In addition to the single instruments, Tribal provides 19 Multis. These presets combine multiple instruments to form layered drums, earthy percussion ensembles, and rhythmic textures. The Multis are designed to offer ready-made combinations while retaining access to the underlying instrument controls.
Each instrument includes separate Close and Room microphone positions. According to Schallenberg Engineering, the recordings have been mixed and adjusted to achieve a dry, punchy, and natural sound intended to blend easily into a mix.
The included engine provides a range of control options for shaping and customizing playback:
- Independent ADSR control for each microphone position
- Per-round robin activation and deactivation
- Full control over key-to-sound assignment
- Alternative sample mapping, where lower keys trigger lower dynamics and higher keys trigger higher dynamics
- Delay compensating pitching
- Random delay for added variation
- Adjustable onset using negative track delay
- Customizable output assignments
These features are intended to give users detailed control over articulation, dynamics, timing, and routing, supporting both traditional percussion programming and more experimental rhythmic design.
Tribal is available from the Schallenberg Engineering website for $49, with an introductory price of $39.
