Scrap Brain Audio has launched Whorl, a microslice sequencer plugin designed to create rhythmic patterns from loaded sound files. The plugin analyses audio material and organises it into categories intended for step-based sequencing and pattern generation.
Whorl examines transient intensity and spectral weight within an audio file, separating detected material into punchy attacks, tonal bodies, and sustaining textures. These slices can then be triggered using a 16-step sequencer, with patterns created manually or through the plugin’s probability-based rhythm engine.
The sequencer supports per-step divisions of up to 1/32 notes, while sustain ties can extend selected steps. Empty steps may be configured to play digital silence or a low-level ambient texture derived from the loaded source audio.
Whorl includes two randomisation functions with different scopes:
- Random Slices reassigns microslices while retaining the existing rhythm and step placements.
- Random Pattern generates a new arrangement of step mathematics, polyrhythmic beat placements, and per-step effects.
Up to four pattern variations can be stored in hardware-style memory slots. These slots can be switched in real time via MIDI, allowing saved pattern changes to be triggered during performance or arrangement work.
The plugin also includes a step-assigned effects matrix. Users can create three discrete sound profiles using geometric effect slots, combining processing options such as distortion, delay, auto-pan, reverse, tape stop, and filtering. Each profile can be assigned to individual sequencer steps.
According to Scrap Brain Audio, the effects system is designed to apply events including tape stops, half-bar reverses, and ping-pong echoes to individual hits from within Whorl’s sequencing workflow.
Whorl is available from the Scrap Brain Audio website for $99, with a limited-time introductory price of $39.
