Softube has launched Reference 1998 Equalizer, a new equalizer plug-in for macOS and Windows. Developed by Softube, the plug-in models a tube-driven, passive equalizer design with four parallel EQ bands and is intended for mixing and mastering work.
Reference 1998 Equalizer is based on a hardware design described by Softube as a modern classic. Its four passive, parallel bands are designed to provide equalization alongside tube-stage warmth and saturation, while the circuit design includes headroom intended for program material.
The plug-in’s shelving filters are a central part of the design. According to Softube, these filters can move from broad, smooth curves to more distinct tonal shapes, including shelving curves intended to support low-frequency adjustments.
Reference 1998 Equalizer can be used as a standalone plug-in in compatible DAWs and is also Console 1 Ready. It can additionally be loaded into the second slot of Softube’s Equalizers plug-in, allowing it to be used within that environment alongside other Equalizers modules.

Installation and licence management require a Softube account, an iLok account, a compatible DAW host, and internet access for downloading installers and managing licences.
Reference 1998 Equalizer is priced at USD 79.99 and is currently available with a 20% introductory discount. It is also included in the Reference Equalizers Bundle for USD 149.89 and the Equalizers + Reference Equalizers Bundle for USD 248.99. During the promotion, the Equalizers Bundle is discounted by 40%, while the Equalizers + Reference Equalizers Bundle is discounted by 60%. The promotion is scheduled to end on September 12.
