Solid State Logic has launched SSL 4K G Channel Strip plugin, available for both Mac and Windows users. This release aims to provide an authentic emulation of the iconic SSL 4000 G channel strip, capturing the essence of a sound that has defined numerous hit records across various genres.
The SSL 4K G plugin is designed to replicate the distinctive sonic characteristics of the SSL 4000 G console, which became a staple in renowned studios from Olympic Studios in London to the Record Plant in Los Angeles. This console’s unique sound has been instrumental in shaping the music of legendary engineers and producers such as Spike Stent, Bob Rock, Dr. Dre, and MixedByAli.
The plugin offers detailed circuit modeling, including the revered Pink ‘292’ and Black ‘242’ EQ flavors, along with a refined dynamics section. Users can expect features such as:
- Meticulous modeling of the original console
- Choice between 4000 G-Series Pink 292 and Black 242 EQ flavors
- Expertly modeled G-Series Dynamics for signature punch and control
- Creative saturation and tone shaping via mic amp, impedance control, and output VCA modeling
- Integration with UC1/UF8/UF1 via SSL 360° and the Plug-in Mixer
- ‘HQ’ mode for intelligent oversampling
The SL 4000 G console, introduced in 1987, expanded on the legacy of the SL 4000 E. It offered a smoother, more refined sound, thanks to innovations like redesigned microphone preamps and the Pink Knob ‘292’ EQ. This console provided a polished sound that was a departure from the more aggressive tones of its predecessors.
The 4K G plugin captures the rich, non-linear analog character of the original console. It features precise emulation with component-level modeling and detailed circuit schematics. The plugin also includes output fader VCA modeling, adding harmonic saturation throughout the channel strip.
Users can engage the classic 4000 E Series Jensen transformer-modeled mic preamp, with adjustable saturation and Variable Mic Input Impedance control. This feature, taken from the FX383 G Series outboard unit, allows for creative tone shaping, ideal for applications like lo-fi drum processing.
The plugin’s EQ capabilities are enhanced by the distinctive HMF ×3 and LMF ÷3 selector switches from the ‘292’ EQ. These switches enable unique EQ curves, allowing for flexible tone shaping in the low and high-frequency regions. The variable Q design ensures that smaller boosts or cuts result in broader curves.
The dynamics section of the 4000 G console underwent several revisions, culminating in a refined compression characteristic that is faithfully reproduced in the 4K G plugin. This precision is invaluable for creating complex mixes in modern productions.
The 4K G plugin also features output fader VCA modeling, emulating the THAT 2002T ‘Blue Can’ VCA. This design imparts a distinct harmonic distortion to the signal, adding character to the final output.
For enhanced processing, the plugin offers an HQ mode that applies intelligent oversampling, providing a closer approximation of a continuous analog signal.
Users can control the SSL channel strip plugins from the SSL 360° Plug-in Mixer, offering integration with SSL UC1, UF8, and UF1 controllers for hands-on control.
