Song Cage has launched Song Cage Plugin, a songwriting tool for AU and VST3 hosts developed by Song Cage, a product of Digital Candy LLC. The plugin places lyrics, chords, melody and song structure on a shared timeline within a DAW, with MIDI output synchronised to the host transport.
Song Cage Plugin is designed to provide a writing workspace within a music production session. Chord and melody data can be streamed as MIDI to instruments chosen by the user, allowing the musical material created in the plugin to play alongside a DAW project.
The plugin does not use AI generation. Its chord suggestions are based on functional harmony, with suggestions identified according to their musical role. These labels include diatonic chords, chords borrowed from a parallel mode, secondary dominants and tritone substitutions.
A modulation panel is included for working with changes of key. It provides pivot chords, cadential routes and routes intended to return a song to its original key.
Song Cage Plugin also includes lyric-writing tools that operate offline. These provide rhyme results organised by syllable count, along with slant rhymes and semantic associations. The developer states that these tools do not rely on an external lookup service.
The release is part of the wider Song Cage platform, which is also available as a web application and desktop software for macOS and Windows. Song Cage additionally offers a free capture app for iOS and Android, designed to work offline without an account.
Song Cage Plugin is available in AU and VST3 formats. It supports macOS 11.0 or later on Apple silicon and Intel-based systems, as well as Windows.
Price: $99 one-time, which also includes the macOS and Windows desktop app on the same licence. 14-day free trial. Currently $69 in an End of Summer sale until 7 September 2026.
