Tape DSP has released a free plug-in pack for Windows, macOS, and Linux, built around a shared physically modeled reel-to-reel tape engine. The collection includes three separate plug-ins designed to bring tape-based processing to mixing and creative workflows.
The new pack comprises Tape Machine, Tape Compressor, and Tape Echo. Each plug-in uses the same underlying reel-to-reel model, with controls and workflows tailored to different production tasks. The plug-ins are available in VST3, Audio Unit (AU), and LV2 formats, and are distributed through a single installer. No user account is required for download.
Tape Machine is designed as a tape saturation processor. According to Tape DSP, it focuses on adding warmth, harmonic content, and a sense of cohesion to individual tracks or full mixes. The processing is based on the shared tape engine, which models the behaviour of a reel-to-reel system to introduce nonlinearities and tonal coloration associated with magnetic tape.
Tape Compressor builds on the same modeling foundation, presenting it in a channel compressor format. The plug-in is intended to provide tape-style dynamic control, with an emphasis on weight and cohesion. By combining compression characteristics with tape modeling, it is positioned for use on channels or buses where subtle dynamic shaping and tonal character are required.
Tape Echo applies the reel-to-reel engine to delay processing. It is designed to produce a range of delay effects, from short slapback echoes to more extended, modulated trails. The tape-based modeling introduces movement and variation that reflect the mechanical nature of traditional tape delay systems.
The three included plug-ins are:
- Tape Machine – tape saturation processor for harmonic enhancement and mix cohesion
- Tape Compressor – tape-style compressor for channel dynamics and tonal shaping
- Tape Echo – tape delay effect for rhythmic echoes and evolving repeats
All three plug-ins share the same core engine, allowing users to apply consistent tape modeling characteristics across different processing tasks within a session.
The pack supports the following formats:
It is compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux systems. Installation is handled through a single package that includes all three plug-ins.
In addition to the downloadable plug-ins, Tape DSP also provides a Studio version featuring a full-quality web engine accessible through its website.
The Tape DSP plug-in pack is available as a free download from the company’s website.
