The Note Audio has launched True Panner, a stereo panning and spatial imaging plugin for macOS and Windows. The plugin combines conventional level-based panning controls with ITD, or Interaural Time Difference, time-based panning.
True Panner is designed to provide both level and timing cues when positioning audio within a stereo field. While standard channel pan controls typically adjust the relative level of the left and right channels, ITD panning applies small arrival-time differences between channels to represent directional placement.
According to The Note Audio, the plugin’s time-based panning is frequency-independent, meaning that moving a source through the stereo field does not require frequency-specific processing. The controls can be used individually or in combination for level-based and time-based stereo positioning.
The interface includes six named modes:
- Balance
- Dual Pan
- Width
- Time Pan
- Spread
- Output
Balance provides conventional left-right level adjustment, while Dual Pan offers separate control of the left and right channels. Width controls the stereo width of a signal, and Time Pan applies the plugin’s ITD-based timing adjustment. Spread and Output provide further controls for the stereo image and final output stage.
True Panner also includes a real-time stereo field visualizer, intended to display the results of level- and time-based adjustments. The Note Audio states that the plugin has low CPU usage and is intended for use across multiple channels in a session.
The plugin is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats for macOS and Windows. It can operate offline after installation and does not require licence activation.
True Panner is available free of charge, with no trial period or feature restrictions. A free account at thenoteaudio.com is required to download it.
