Tonal Forms has introduced DADO – Lilac Alloy, a free compact virtual instrument designed around hybrid acoustic and metal-based textures.
DADO – Lilac Alloy centres on a control element referred to as the Cube, which maps its full sonic range to a single drag gesture. Users rotate the Cube to crossfade between Sound A and Sound B, while tilting it introduces an additional FX layer. The layout is intended to provide direct visual feedback, aligning movement with audible changes.
The instrument includes eight evolving sounds derived from organic and metal-bodied instruments. These source materials are shaped into hybrid textures that combine percussive attacks with sustained, morphing tonal layers. According to Tonal Forms, the design is suited to media composition, game scoring, and sound design contexts where gradual tonal shifts and atmospheric detail are required.
A built-in Variate system allows users to generate new parameter combinations with a single click. This feature is designed to encourage exploration by quickly presenting alternative configurations, which can then be retained or further adjusted. In addition, a motion generator can animate the Cube automatically, introducing evolving movement without continuous manual input.
Sound shaping is supported by 31 Creative FX, which form part of the instrument’s modulation and transformation capabilities. These effects integrate with the Cube’s tilt function, enabling layered processing as part of the core performance gesture.
For more detailed control, DADO – Lilac Alloy provides per-key volume grids and aftertouch response. This allows users to shape dynamics and timbral balance across the keyboard, offering deeper interaction for those who wish to refine individual notes or passages.

Tonal Forms describes its work as rooted in playful exploration, where geometry, interaction, and listening converge in the design of experimental virtual instruments. The practice was founded by Berlin-based composer and designer Francesco Sabatini, with each release conceived as a designed object intended to be experienced through interaction.
