U-he has recently unveiled a free public beta of its Zebralette 3 synthesizer plugin, compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux. This new version marks a significant advancement in the Zebra series, featuring a single Zebra oscillator with added modulation sources and effects, all housed within a sleek, fully vectorized GUI.
Zebralette 3’s oscillator module is a standalone powerhouse, boasting a spline-based wavetable editor at its core. It supports up to sixteen wavetable snapshots, each with a range of morphing options. The synthesizer also includes two oscillator effect slots, offering a selection of over twenty effects, and an audio engine that can switch between wavetable and additive synthesis.
Despite being a single-oscillator synthesizer, Zebralette 3 offers a wealth of exploration opportunities. The robust spline editor enables users to easily shape waveforms and modulation signals using a variety of versatile tools. Users can quickly create a waveform using the stamp tools or spend hours meticulously shaping the wavetable snapshots and their morphing behavior. The wavetable can represent the actual oscillator waveform or be used to shape the oscillator’s spectrum.
Users can switch between regular wavetable or additive synthesis mode and manipulate individual harmonics in additive mode. The sound can be further shaped and modulated through the two oscillator effect slots, which offer a mix of Zebra 2’s most popular effects and a variety of new creations. Users can also export their wavetable (excluding modulation and oscillator effects) for use in their preferred wavetable synthesizer.
Zebralette 3 will be available completely free of charge. Users are encouraged to refer to the work-in-progress user guide during their initial exploration period. The guide can be accessed here: Zebralette 3 User Guide WIP 20240216.
After familiarizing themselves with the user guide and watching the introductory video, users can dive into creating their own sounds and wavetables. The software also includes a selection of work-in-progress presets to provide a glimpse into Zebralette’s vast capabilities.
