Våld Labs has launched Tresse, a dual-layer polyphonic synthesizer for macOS and Windows. The instrument combines multiple synthesis approaches with modulation tools and an integrated generative sequencer designed to create evolving patterns across its two layers.
Tresse provides 39 synthesis engines per oscillator. Its engine collection includes 24 derived from Classic Plaits, alongside 15 additional engines developed by Våld Labs. The available approaches include physical modelling, modal and comb resonators, FM, phase distortion, formant synthesis, additive-style sounds, granular synthesis, noise percussion and other sound-generation methods.
The synthesizer is organised around two independent layers, with each layer supporting up to eight voices of polyphony. The layers can be sequenced separately, allowing users to combine different sound sources and rhythmic structures within a single patch.
The modulation section includes three LFOs, two sequencer-driven modulation lanes and approximately 50 modulation destinations. Additional voice and sound-shaping functions include per-voice drift, ADSR envelopes, chorus, distortion and bit-crushing. Tresse also includes a continuously variable SEM-style filter with continuous mode operation.
Its built-in sequencer offers seven generative algorithms:
- Euclidean patterns
- Random walks and wave interference
- Logistic maps and cellular automata
- Kaprekar sequences and Fibonacci-derived patterns
Probability controls, pattern density settings and independent timing divisions can be applied to each layer. This setup is intended to allow the two sequencers to produce related patterns that change over time.
Tresse originated as a hardware synthesizer project based around an ESP32 processor. The initial project adapted synthesis DSP for a physical instrument with dedicated controls, a display, Bluetooth MIDI and Wi-Fi connectivity. Våld Labs developed the desktop version from that work, while the hardware version remains in development.
Tresse is available as an AU, VST3 and standalone application on macOS, and as a VST3 plug-in on Windows. An iOS version for iPhone and iPad is also planned.
Tresse is currently priced at €19.99.
