Werewolf Dynamics has launched a free VST3 bundle for Windows featuring eleven analog modeling plugins built using circuit-level simulation. The collection includes compressors, equalizers, tape machines, preamps, and modulation effects, each designed to solve the underlying analog circuit in real time rather than applying static response curves.
According to the developer, each module models the behavior of its respective circuit at component level. Instead of capturing hardware at a fixed operating point, the plugins simulate circuit interactions dynamically. Tube bias shifts under signal load, transformer cores respond to flux and frequency, and optical compression elements retain program-dependent memory. Meter movement, nonlinearities, and response curves are described as direct outcomes of the circuit calculations.
The bundle includes the following modules:
- WD Opto – An optical compressor in the LA-2A lineage with two voicings: the tube-based WD-2A and the solid-state WD-3A. It includes additional drive and transformer controls not present on the original hardware designs.
- WD Mu – A variable-mu compressor built around a simulated 6386 push-pull stage with a six-position time-constant bank. In keeping with the original circuit design, it does not feature a threshold control. A front-panel bias control and rear-panel tube pairing adjustments are included.
- WDTec – A passive tube equalizer combining program and midrange sections. The inductors are modeled with active magnetic cores, and a Core control adjusts how strongly they are driven.
- WD Tape – A complete tape machine simulation including record head, bias oscillator, and reproduce head. Alignment follows the procedures used in hardware servicing. Two tape formulations are provided, and each instance includes individualized transport characteristics.
- WD XQ – A parametric equalizer offering five circuit types: a precision digital design, two console-style circuits, a stepped American design, and a 1973 inductor-based circuit. All five support dynamic bands, with the interface remaining consistent while the underlying circuit behavior changes.
- WD FET – A FET compressor that models four circuit paths, including an 1176-style design, a 760 variant, a germanium-based path, and a precision mode. The ratio network is derived from the 1176LN schematic, enabling the all-buttons mode as a function of the circuit.
- WD VCA – A stereo bus compressor based on a Blackmer-style gain cell. It provides two detector modes, Console Bus and RMS Punch, along with auto release and an over-easy knee response.
- WD Pre – A multi-circuit preamp plugin with five selectable signal paths, including a precision digital option, a Class A British console design with transformer coupling, an American op-amp console, a German broadcast valve stage, and a cassette 4-track desk channel. Gain adjustments alter the operating point of the selected circuit.
- WD Echo – A tape loop echo featuring a motor-driven transport, three playback heads, and a spring reverb tank. The loop includes modeled splice behavior, and changes to repeat rate affect audio already present on the loop.
- WD AX – An exciter based on the original patents, generating a sideband rather than applying equalization to the fundamental signal. It also includes a Big Bottom section designed to extend note decay rather than transient level.
- WD Rack – A virtual chassis environment that allows compatible modules to share a common frame. It introduces shared power supply behavior, including sag under combined load, adjacent-slot crosstalk, and reorderable slot placement. Modules may also operate independently without the rack.
Each plugin includes a rear panel section exposing service-level parameters typically internal to hardware units. These controls include supply draw, bias adjustment, transformer headroom, and tube type selection, allowing users to adjust calibration-level behaviors within the simulated circuits.
The bundle is intended for producers, engineers, and sound designers seeking circuit-based analog behavior in a Windows environment. The release is currently available as beta software in VST3 format.
