Occult Audio has launched Derelict, a sound design instrument based on recordings made in abandoned and overlooked locations. The instrument combines approximately 300 recorded sources with layering, processing and modulation tools intended for creating evolving textures and effects.
Derelict’s factory library includes recordings from an abandoned coal-mining town near Banff, Alberta, including machinery, bowed metal, mine carts, tanks, cisterns and chains. It also includes material recorded at a disused water pumping station and an abandoned house, alongside selected sounds from GÆSTEN II.
The main Strata mode provides three independent sound layers. Each layer can load a separate source and includes level, pan, envelope, filter and gate-sequencer controls. The layers can be processed individually using Heat saturation and the Corrode section, which provides Drive, Bit Depth, Counter, Noise Gain and Filter macros for digital degradation processing.
Movement controls are available for generating changing parameter settings. Drift gradually moves toward new random values, while Chaos changes settings more abruptly. A Randomise function can load new sources and reset filters, gates, Heat and Movement settings on either instrument page.
Derelict also includes Seam mode, which maps a single source across the keyboard. This mode provides a pitch envelope for rising and falling pitch effects, along with a filter, filter LFO, gate sequencer, Heat processing and Space controls. Its parameters can also use Drift and Chaos movement functions.
A shared Source Browser is used for loading sounds into all layers. Factory material is organised into Metals, Noise, Organics, Pads, Sustains & Drones and Textures categories. Users can also add WAV files, define root note and spread settings, save them as sample maps, and access them through a User category alongside the included content.
Additional master processing includes a compressor, delay, limiter and convolution reverb with selectable impulse responses. The preset system supports searching and saving, with presets retaining the selected sources for each layer as well as parameter settings.
Occult Audio states that Derelict is designed for sound design work in film, television, games, horror and trailer production, as well as other contexts requiring recorded metal, air, water and decaying environmental textures.
Derelict is available from the Occult Audio website for £99, with an introductory launch price of £59. Newsletter subscribers are eligible for an additional discount during Occult Audio’s Halloween sale.
