Dark Fairytale Instruments has launched MINA, a sampled kalimba instrument designed to move between traditional kalimba tones and piano- or celeste-like textures. The instrument includes recorded articulations, sample variations, sound-shaping controls, and a 58-key range.
MINA centres on a Pianofy control, which changes the instrument from a more direct kalimba sound towards an imagined piano or celeste-style result. According to Dark Fairytale Instruments, the control reduces the natural ringing of the kalimba while introducing celeste and dulcitone layers for a fuller and warmer sound.
At higher Pianofy settings, release samples are incorporated into the sound. These are intended to emulate mechanical noises associated with a keyboard action.
The instrument includes two recorded kalimba articulations:
- A harder thumb-played articulation with 30 round robins.
- A softer articulation played with a felt pick, with 20 round robins.
A Softness control blends between the two articulations. The Bloom control adjusts the attack, while Reverse introduces reversed samples.
MINA also includes a Mischief control that alters sample start points, creating small timing differences between the two articulations. A Space control provides reverb, with seven available reverb types.
The release is intended for music production uses requiring sampled kalimba sounds, as well as layered piano- and celeste-influenced textures.
MINA is available from the Dark Fairytale Instruments website for $24.90, with a launch price of $19.90.
