Past to Future Reverbs has launched Vinyl Sim, a direct-drive turntable system simulator plugin. The plugin is designed to recreate elements of the vinyl cutting and playback chain, including electronic, mechanical, and surface-noise characteristics.
According to the developer, Vinyl Sim combines neural captures of a cutting lathe valve amplifier with measurements from an actual cut test disc. Its modelling covers the lathe input stage, lacquer frequency response, inner-groove high-frequency loss, motor rumble, speed variation, and pitch behaviour.
The plugin includes an interactive direct-drive platter whose speed rises to 33 1/3 RPM in approximately three quarters of a second and brakes in around one second. The transport behaviour affects the processed audio as the platter accelerates or slows, allowing users to automate stops, pitch changes, and needle-position movement.
A pitch fader provides adjustment of up to 8 percent in either direction. Moving the virtual needle towards the label introduces the high-frequency changes associated with inner-groove playback, based on the developer’s stated measurement approach.
Vinyl Sim is structured as six individually switchable modules, allowing individual parts of the process to be enabled or bypassed. The developer states that the plugin can be used on a mix bus or on individual sources, with its default settings reflecting the reference disc and higher settings representing more worn record conditions.
- Neural captures of a cutting lathe tube amplifier stage
- Wow, flutter, warp wobble, tone and width limits, and stylus tracing wear controls
- Reference-disc hiss and rumble, plus seven recorded noise-loop samples
- Direct-drive platter controls, pitch adjustment, and 34 factory presets
The developer states that the neural processing is used for the nonlinear behaviour of the cutting lathe amplifier, while physical measurements inform the vinyl-related frequency response, pitch instability, and mechanical behaviour. This separates the electronic and playback components rather than applying a single processing method across the entire signal path.
Vinyl Sim is available for €29. A seven-day free trial version is also available.
