News: Strange Loops Audio has updated gRainbow, a free granular synth plugin.

Strange Loops Audio has recently released an update for gRainbow, their free granular synth plugin. This update brings the software to version 1.0.0 and is compatible with both Mac and Windows operating systems.

gRainbow is an open-source, cross-platform granular synth plugin. It employs pitch detection to select candidates for granular synthesis or sampling. The software was developed to address certain limitations inherent in traditional granular synths. These include pitch variations in the input clip that result in inharmonic tones, the requirement for manual pitch matching to the input clip for accurate notes with MIDI input, and pitch shifting often performed with timestretching which can lead to unwanted artifacts.

The plugin boasts a full MIDI range, polyphonic voicing, and reliable pitch detection using Spotify’s BasicPitch machine learning model. It can support up to 150 grains playing simultaneously and offers highly customizable parameters. Additionally, it includes a comprehensive internal modulation and mapping system, as well as a preset loading and saving system.

The gRainbow package comes with a standalone and plugin version (VST, AU, LV2) of the software, along with a 10 preset starter pack for Windows, MacOS, or Linux. The product has garnered 49 ratings, with an impressive average score of 4.9 out of 5.
