Beatsurfing has launched DRUW, a software instrument designed for real-time performance within a digital audio workstation. The plugin connects with a companion app for phones and tablets, allowing the mobile device to function as a playing surface.
DRUW is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats for macOS and Windows. It opens with a configurable instrument layout that can use included sound kits or user samples. Users can begin with the supplied setup, load presets, generate a new layout through the plugin’s randomisation function, or create an arrangement from a blank page.
The free DRUW companion app is available for iOS and Android devices. A phone or tablet can connect to a computer through USB or a shared Wi-Fi network, with the app intended to connect automatically when DRUW is opened in compatible music software. Within the app, users can move, resize and exchange instruments on the screen to configure the performance layout.
DRUW also supports compatible MIDI pads and keyboards. Beatsurfing states that the instrument includes performance options for quantisation, swing and unquantised timing, alongside variation and interaction features intended to retain user control of the performance. Recordings can be captured in the DAW hosting the plugin.
The release is intended for producers working in studio-based DAWs, live performers and controllerists incorporating hands-on elements into their setups, and DJ/producers who want to add played material over a mix. Beatsurfing also provides a browser-based version for trying DRUW.
DRUW is available for $179, with a launch price of $59. Beatsurfing states that customer loyalty discounts and bundle pricing may also apply. The companion app is free through the Apple App Store and Google Play.
