UB DSP has launched Filter Blender, a filter effects plugin built around blending three analogue-style filter models within a triangular control interface. The plugin is the developer’s third release, following Grit Blender and Vowel Blender.
Filter Blender runs three filters in parallel, with each corner of the triangle hosting one of 12 available filter models. Each filter has independent cutoff, resonance and drive controls, while a movable point inside the triangle determines the contribution of each corner according to its distance from that corner.
The triangle control is designed to change filter slope, resonance and saturation together as the point moves. Positioning the point directly on a corner uses that corner as a single filter, while filters at zero weighting are not processed. Each corner also includes a polarity control, allowing inverted filter signals to be combined with the others.
The 12 filter models are:
- MooLadder, a four-pole transistor ladder filter
- Acid303, a three-pole diode ladder whose resonance responds to input level
- OberSilk, a two-pole state-variable filter
- ScreamKor20, a Sallen-Key design with clipping diodes after the filter
- BritesteinP, a multimode filter with positive feedback and a limiter in its feedback loop
- LushJup8, a four-pole OTA cascade
- CrunchWasp, a CMOS state-variable design with S-curve processing and quantisation
- CoastBand291, two serial band-pass filters designed to produce West Coast-style ringing in band-pass mode
- WildDiode3, a three-pole diode bridge filter
- FunkyFollowIII, a state-variable filter with an integrated envelope follower
- CryWah, a swept band-pass filter
- MorphPoleX, a pole-mixing multimode filter that also includes a bell mode
Additional processing modules include a comb filter, a phaser with two to 24 all-pass stages, a four-formant vowel filter and a ring modulator. These modules can be placed before or after the filter section and arranged in any order.
A motion recorder can loop a path drawn within the triangle and synchronise it to the host tempo. Filter Blender also provides nine modulator types, with up to 16 modulators operating simultaneously and supporting intermodulation. The modulation section includes an envelope generator triggered by audio or MIDI, plus a MIDI modulator supporting key tracking, velocity, aftertouch and modulation wheel input. Per-note pressure is supported in CLAP hosts that transmit it.
UB DSP states that all filter models use zero-delay feedback. The three four-pole ladder filters apply saturation within their feedback loops and are solved on a per-sample basis using Newton-Raphson processing. Eight of the filter models can self-oscillate when drive is increased.
The plugin offers half-band oversampling at 1x, 2x and 4x settings, with automatic 2x oversampling when an audible corner exceeds 8 kHz. It reports a fixed latency of 47 samples to the host. Other global functions include a 20 Hz to 500 Hz LOWS crossover, phase-aligned mix control, loudness matching, BRK and SFT limiter modes, and L/R, M/S and mono processing options.
Filter Blender includes 30 factory presets across eight categories. In CLAP-compatible hosts, the presets can be accessed through CLAP preset discovery in the host browser.
Filter Blender is available for macOS 10.13 or later in AU, VST3, CLAP and AAX formats, with Apple Silicon and Intel support. Versions earlier than macOS 11 are not tested. Windows 64-bit versions are available in VST3, CLAP and AAX formats, while Linux 64-bit versions are available in VST3 and CLAP formats.
Filter Blender is available now at a launch price of $39 until November 15, 2026, at 23:59 CET, after which it will cost $68, plus applicable tax. Owners of Grit Blender or Vowel Blender can apply their owner’s discount to the launch price. The licence uses an offline keyfile for up to three computers, with no iLok or subscription requirement. A fully functional trial is available without a time limit and inserts two seconds of silence every 40 seconds; purchases include a 30-day money-back guarantee.
