AudioThing has released Materia additive re-synthesizer plugin that turns any sample into a playable instrument.

News: AudioThing has released Materia additive re-synthesizer plugin that turns any sample into a playable instrument.

AudioThing has launched Materia, an additive re-synthesizer designed to transform loaded samples into playable instruments. The plugin analyses a sound into harmonic partials that can be edited, modulated, and played polyphonically.

Materia analyses samples into partials with individual frequency, amplitude, phase, and envelope information. Users can retain elements of the source sound or alter the analysed spectrum through manual partial editing and additional processing.

The sample panel is used to load and analyse audio. The resulting model is saved within the plugin state, allowing projects and presets to be reopened without requiring access to the original sample file.

Each partial can be adjusted independently, including its frequency ratio, amplitude, and phase. Materia provides a 128-point editable envelope for each partial, with controls for duration and sustain loop points. The Sync Partial Edits option applies timing changes across all partials when required.

Advanced Analysis assigns independent envelopes and sustain loops to partials. The Add Empty Partials function makes otherwise silent partials available for manual drawing and sound creation, including when beginning from an empty spectrum.

Materia includes a filter with 10 types, including low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, notch, and formant modes. Its effects section contains four processors:

  • An algorithmic resonator with material models including pipes, plates, glass, wood, stone, gongs, membranes, and springs
  • A tap echo
  • A multi-stage phaser
  • A waveshaper

Additional features include 96 partials, two envelopes, two LFOs with drawable waveforms, a resizable interface, brightness and contrast controls, and a preset browser with a randomizer.

AudioThing states that Materia is intended for sample-based sound design and instrument creation, combining analysed sample material with editable additive synthesis components.

Materia is priced at $69, with an introductory price of $39.
