Muse Group has launched Audacity 4, a new version of its free audio editor for macOS, Windows, and Linux. The release introduces a redesigned interface, a revised clip-editing workflow, and a new Audacity project format.
Audacity 4 is intended for recording, editing, restoring, and mixing audio for music, podcasts, voice recordings, and video. Muse Group states that the application supports a range of audio formats and can be extended with third-party plug-ins.
The updated editing workflow includes gain envelopes, trim and stretch handles, direct sample editing, and loop regions. Playback, recording, looping, and device controls have also been revised, while meters are now provided on individual tracks.
Users can customise the interface through workspace, theme, accent colour, clip colour, and toolbar-layout settings. The release also includes rebuilt effects and integrated tools for common recording and editing tasks.
Audacity 4 supports VST3, Nyquist, LV2, and Audio Unit plug-ins. It can also access effects available through MuseHub. The application includes cloud integration through audio.com for saving, managing, and publishing projects.
The release introduces the .aup4 project format and provides conversion from Audacity 3 projects. Native support for Audacity 3 project files is included, although several features from the previous generation are not currently available in Audacity 4, including Time Tracks, MIDI tracks, Mixer, macros, scripting, VAMP, LADSPA, and play-at-speed.
Muse Group requires the MuseHub desktop application to download, install, and manage Audacity 4, including software updates. MuseHub is also used to manage other audio tools from the company.
Audacity 4 is available free of charge through the MuseHub desktop application.
