Osterhouse Sounds has launched Ripple Viola, a plugin built around playable two-note viola slurs for creating expressive string textures and rhythmic parts. The instrument responds to overlapping note pairs and can trigger recorded phrases in time with a project’s tempo.
Ripple Viola uses two-note slurs, referred to by the developer as “ripples.” Playing overlapping notes within a perfect fourth triggers a phrase, while playing chords can produce multiple slurs that follow the notes and harmonies being played.
The plugin includes three ripple types:
- Quarter-note ripples
- Eighth-note ripples
- Sixteenth-note Snap ripples
Its samples were recorded at 110 BPM and are time-stretched automatically to match the host project’s tempo. Speed controls include half-speed and double-speed settings for projects at substantially slower or faster tempos, along with triplet options for additional rhythmic variations.
Direction settings determine how the phrases move between notes. In As Played mode, ripples may move upward or downward according to the order in which notes are performed. Separate Up and Down modes set a consistent direction regardless of note order.
A Sync option aligns overlapping ripples by cutting into each newly triggered sample, allowing the phrases to fall into a shared rhythmic position. Each ripple continues to its end before crossfading into one of four release samples. The plugin selects the release sample automatically according to the position within the recorded swell.
Ripple Viola also includes a collection of MIDI clips intended as an idea bank. Users can preview the clips and drag them directly into a compatible music project.
Osterhouse Sounds has also converted its earlier Ripple Cello Kontakt library into plugin format. The two instruments are available together as a bundle.
Ripple Viola is available for $79, with an introductory price of $59. Owners of the Ripple Cello library are eligible for an additional 15% discount. The Ripple Viola and Ripple Cello bundle is regularly priced at $158 and is reduced to $99 during the Ripple Viola introductory period.
