OXO Music has launched OXO Sample, a lo-fi sampler and sequencer plugin designed around the workflow and audio characteristics of mid-1980s hardware samplers. The plugin combines 12-bit, 32 kHz mono sampling with six sample slots, live buffer editing controls, and a per-slot step sequencer.
OXO Sample is designed to record, load, edit, resample, and sequence audio within a single plugin. Audio can be captured directly into a sample slot from an iPad microphone or from channels in a compatible host, while loaded samples are processed through the plugin’s 12-bit signal path.
The plugin also supports resampling, allowing its output to be routed back into a sample slot for successive processing stages. Further sample-rate reduction options include automatic resampling at 20 kHz, 16 kHz, 10 kHz, or 8 kHz.
Each of OXO Sample’s six slots supports up to six voices. Slots can be configured for monophonic playback, including portamento, or polyphonic playback. The playback controls for sample start, end, and loop positions are presented as live sliders that access the audio buffer directly. According to OXO Music, placing the start position after the end position causes the sample to play in reverse.
Additional playback and sound-shaping controls include loop crossfade, a random start-point function, low-pass and high-pass filters, velocity response for level and low-pass cutoff, and alternating stereo spread for individual voices. The onboard LFO can be assigned to pitch, filter, or loop position, with free-running and retriggered operation available.
Sequencing is handled by the OXO Steps system, with each sample slot receiving its own sequencer. Every slot provides eight patterns of up to 64 steps, alongside nine polymetric lanes:
- Gate
- Hold/Legato
- Pitch and Octave
- Velocity, Length, and Probability
- Control A and Control B
The two Control lanes can be used to automate sampler parameters, including filter settings and the sample start, end, and loop points. Sequences can be recorded from MIDI input or entered using the preview slot button. OXO Sample also includes eight scenes for launching pattern changes across all six slots.
MIDI Learn support allows sampler controls to be assigned to MIDI continuous controllers. The plugin includes undo and redo functions, including for audio edits.
