Denormal Audio has launched Guardrail, a MIDI effect plugin designed to turn programmed piano roll chords into playable MIDI performances. The company’s first product is intended for songwriters, producers, composers, and musicians working with keyboards at a range of skill levels.
Guardrail provides a performance-oriented interface for developing chord progressions and MIDI parts. Its Performance Zone maps white keys to chord tones, while black keys trigger passing tones and chord extensions that are tuned to the current song material.
The plugin is designed to let users focus on timing, texture, and playing feel while working from existing chord ideas. Rather than creating music independently, Guardrail is intended to transform and extend MIDI input supplied by the user through keyboard performance controls.
Its built-in Performance List automatically records performances for later comparison and recall. Users can organise and favourite takes, then drag MIDI material from the list into a DAW arrangement.
Guardrail also includes mapping controls for adapting its performance interface. These include exact and compact chord modes, randomisation options, and transposition controls.
Denormal Audio was founded by producer, mix engineer, and sound designer Kurt Feldman and composer and software developer Raphael Radna. According to the company, Guardrail began as a tool the pair developed for their own songwriting workflow before refining it over several years.
The plugin is available for macOS and Windows in AU, VST3, and AAX formats.
Guardrail is available exclusively through the Denormal Audio website from October 14, 2026, at an introductory price of $39 USD for a limited time. Its stated regular price is $59 USD.
